Currently (2019 January 2nd) it seems the best choice is to use the moServices (moS) firmware components, as every manufacturer of this devices stopped releasing updates long time ago.

moServices (moS) is a package with main purpose to deliver additional services and fix some bugs of the original firmware in Media Player devices based on Realtek 1073 or 1283/1185/1186 chipsets. The core of moS is a set of scripts written in Bash (shell) used to install specially prepared extra modules with particular functionality.

You can find lots of info about the firmware, GUI (skins), modules and services available on the moServices forum. Sorry, most of it is in russian, but you can browse it in your language using almost real-time Google Chrome embedded translator.
